The two common pricing models
Flat seasonal contract
$400-$1,200 prepaid for the entire winter season. Covers unlimited plowing events above a defined snowfall trigger (typically 2 inches). Cleanest revenue model — collect upfront in November, deliver throughout the season. Best for premium residential customers who want predictability + priority service in storms.
Per-visit pricing
$50-$120 per plow event (driveway + walkway combo). Lower customer commitment but variable revenue. Often added to existing mowing-customer accounts as opt-in. Best for budget-conscious customers or those with shorter driveways.
Why bundling snow with mowing is the highest-margin move
- Customer already acquired. Zero new CAC. The conversion is a single phone call or upsell email in October.
- Routes already mapped. Plowing runs the same neighborhood density advantage as mowing — clusters of customers per truck.
- Equipment paid down. Mowing crews own pickup trucks year-round. Adding a $5K-$8K plow attachment unlocks a second revenue season from existing capital.
- Winter labor stays employed. Crews who plow in winter stay loyal year-round — much less rehiring + retraining in spring.
The annual revenue lift
A 200-customer mowing operation that converts 50% to snow bundles at $700 average pricing:
- 100 × $700 = $70,000 incremental annual revenue
- ~50% gross margin on plowing (lower than mowing because of salt + equipment wear, higher because no design/planning labor) = $35,000 incremental gross profit
- Near-zero acquisition cost — pure margin on the existing customer relationship
That's a single phone call campaign in October that adds the equivalent of an entire month's summer mowing revenue.
Geographic relevance
Snow plowing bundles are obviously most relevant in regions with consistent winter snowfall:
- Northeast (NY, MA, CT, NJ, PA, ME, VT, NH): Premium fit. Long, snowy winters.
- Midwest (IL, MI, MN, WI, OH, IN): Premium fit. Heavy snowfall regions.
- Mountain West (CO, UT, ID, WY, MT): Strong fit. Variable snowfall but premium pricing.
- Mid-Atlantic (VA, MD, DC): Moderate fit. Lighter winters; per-visit pricing dominates.
- South / Southwest: Limited fit. Snow plowing isn't a meaningful business.
